Best Downhill mountain biking trails in the world

Downhill runs, trails and courses

Trail mix

We have about 20 downhill specific runs and a large number of other trails less DHish, however, still very good riding on big rigs. Varying from full on DH courses to hour long singletrack descents with super aggressive rocky chutes and switchbacks to uber fast and flowing 4x style runs.

The best thing about the trails here is how empty they are. No queues for the chairlifts, no breaking bumps, no being gunned down by someone faster or held up be someone slower. No fire roads & nothing groomed - just perfect lush ancient singletrack.

All runs are chairlift accessible or shuttleable, right to the head of each trail and we will collect you at the bottom again. A bike with at least 6" travel front and back is recommended.

On average, depending on mechanicals etc, we will ride about 5-8 runs per day. Obviously the longer the run the fewer shuttles. Total amount of DHing over 4 days = 20,000 to 30,000m (vertical). Total amount of riding up = 0.0m.

Protection Policy:

You must have the minimum of body armour like knee/shin, elbows etc, a full face lid and a safe and properly set up bike.

Our trails can be ridden by all levels of rider however if you get it wrong, the rocks and trees will have you. Consequently sufficient medical insurance that covers you for mountain biking will also be required.

Example days

This shows a week long itinerary but long weekends runs can be seen in the first 3 days.

Coast – Chairlift DHing

Day 1

Spanish Downhill MTB coursesThe Ridiculator

An absolutely fantastic medium level trail dropping about 800ms. Probably about 20 mins in length a very fast trail filled with small jumps, step ups, the odd medium drop and burms.

A purpose cut DH track that feels natural.

You can easily spend a day riding it again and again to get it right.

Day 2

911

A mixed day of either van shuttles or chairlifting where we will ride a variety of different natural and man made DH runs. The aim will be to work our way up to Super Tweak. James your guide is a DH pro riding for Switchbacks and he can coach over anything you wish to work on.

Day 3

Super Tweak

A considerably harder trail due to the doubles, larger step ups and more air-time required. There are get-out lines but we will stop and session the hard doubles etc and after a few runs the whole trail should be ridable. Spend the rest of the day getting it pinned.

Bubion – Van-assist DHing

Day 4

4x and 'The Cocaine Line'

Greg Minnaar calls it "the funnest 6 minutes you can have on a bike". 'Nuf said. Ride this all day or shift over to ride the "white line" - 40 minutes and 1500ms of burms, off cambers and small drops. Total descending usually about 10,000ms!!

Day 5

Cresta Run

One of the best trails you will ever ride. Not super long but still 700ms of vertical descent with a huge variety of conditions that only a non man-made trail can give.

Ride this several times, stop for some coffees and a bite to eat and then off to a shorter but incredibly technical natural rock garden of about 400ms vertical decent - your arms will not want it to be any longer. Total DHing between 6 and 9,000m (vertical)

Day 6

For 6 inches Only

An incredible 1000m ancient Roman trail of tremendous variety, very technical switchbacks, rock gardens and super fast chutes.

The perfect 'natural' DH course! Usually about 3 runs of this on the day combined with Bryan Adams and Maple Syrup.

Drops and Jumps

Most of our drops have another line choice if you wish to take it. At other points the highest that you will be 'forced' to ride will be only about 4 foot. For those sicker amongst us there are plenty of bigger ones to choose from.

Our drops include:

  • Queen's Cowboys
  • Journey's End
  • Mr. Hankie
  • Puck Bunny
  • Head Dab
  • Rolling Plummet
